Raskal
Biography
Hit song "I Promise" is presently burning up the local charts. Raskal, a young and promising artist is at the forefront of local entertainment, when asked what inspired him to write this song his response was, "I was at work one day and one of my co-workers mentioned the words I Promise and that is where the idea and melody came from. I wanted to sing something that everyone can listen to, enjoy and understand regardless of age. Coming from a very meek and humble background, this 22 year old has the makings of a true giant in the music industry.
Diego Smith, being the baby in a family of five children, grew up in a Christian home in Tunapuna. He says his passion for music comes from above; music is his way of expressing himself emotionally and otherwise. At the tender age of 12, while looking at a Nelly video on television, he said to himself, I am going to be just like him one day, and that is where it all started for this rising star. Calling himself RASKAL, he started off as a Hip Hop/Dancehall artist doing freestyle, he wrote his very first song, "Military mind" when he was just 13 years old.
Realizing at a very early stage that the market for Hip Hop in T&T was very small, he branched off into Reggae showing off his versatility. When asked why he called himself Raskal he smiled and replied "That name was given to me by my High School Principal, Mrs. Phillip, you see, I was very mischievous in school and she used to call me a raskal so when I got into music I just kept the name. Currently he is working out of backyard studios recording his debut album. He also has another big song on the charts which he recently released called "Touch The Street" This song promises to be bigger than "I Promise" it tells about the struggle young people go through these days and is sending a message to stay positive and don't let trivial things get the better of you. He also intends to experiment with Soca for 2011 giving us something to look forward to.
